Looking beneath behaviour to better understand the young person.
Psychologically informed consultation and reflective practice for education professionals.
Alongside teaching and learning, they are increasingly supporting young people with complex emotional, developmental and mental health needs, often within the context of changing family dynamics and experiences of adversity. Whilst education practice and training continues to evolve, opportunities to develop psychological understanding and engage in regular reflective practice can be limited.
Beneath Behaviour believes that meaningful support begins with psychological understanding. Through psychologically informed consultation and reflective practice, I aim to help schools bridge the gap between psychological understanding and everyday educational practice, supporting staff to make sense of the emotional, psychological and developmental processes that may lie beneath behaviour so they can respond with greater confidence, curiosity and compassion.
Teaching is emotionally demanding work. Alongside supporting young people, education professionals continually absorb difficult stories, hold uncertainty and make complex decisions, often with little opportunity to pause and think about the emotional impact of their work. Providing opportunities for reflective practice acknowledges this reality.
Beneath Behaviour believes that teachers deserve regular reflective space to process these experiences, deepen psychological understanding and sustain thoughtful, compassionate practice for both themselves and the young people they encounter.
Psychological consultation
Reflective consultation with school leaders, SENCOs, pastoral teams, teaching staff to think psychologically about individual pupils, complex presentations and dynamics - bespoke sessions informed by attachment theory, developmental trauma and psychologically informed practice.
Staff training
Bespoke training sessions to meet your requirements. Possible topics include:
understanding behaviour through an attachment lens
developmental trauma
therapeutic and relational approaches to behaviour
emotionally available adults in school
building emotionally safe classrooms
recognising emotional abuse and coercive control
understanding autism from a nervous system perspective
Reflective practice
Reflective practice sessions for staff working with young people whose behaviour feels complext, challenging or emotionally demanding, recognising the impact this has on professionals around them.
Rather than asking 'how do we change this young person's behaviour?', psychologically informed consultation begins with a different question: "what might this behaviour be communicating?".
By understanding the emotional, developmental and psychological processes that may lie beneath behaviour, schools are often better placed to respond in ways that reduce distress, strengthen relationships and improve engagement with learning.
Consultation and reflective practice can be delivered online or in person. Whilst one-off sessions can be valuable consistent opportunities to pause, think psychologically and reflect together help support staff well-being and embed psychologically informed thinking within everyday educational practice.

Young people benefit when the adults around them are given the understanding, confidence and reflective space they need to respond thoughtfully. Creating space for adults to think psychologically is one of the most meaningful ways of supporting young people.
